Bulk Editing the Keyword Parameter in AdWords Using the Tracking Template

Track phone calls in analytics

One of the most frequent questions we are asked is “how can I add the keyword tracking parameter to all our ads quickly?”

Using the Tracking Template in Google AdWords, this is very simple. You can edit at 3 different levels:

  • Campaign level
  • Ad group level
  • Ad level

The tracking template created at the ad group or campaign level applies to all the ads in the corresponding ad group or campaign. If multiple tracking templates are defined at different levels, the most specific template will be used, e.g.: if the keyword parameter is defined at ad level, this overrules those defined at a higher level.

This article explains how to quickly and easily edit your ads in AdWords, ensuring that you’re capturing the keywords that are driving clicks and conversions from your display advertising.

Adding the keyword parameter to your PPC ads

  1. In your Google AdWords account, select Campaigns in the top navigation.
    Keyword 1
  2. Select the Ad Groups tab.
    Keyword 2
  3. Select the Campaign, Ad Group, or individual Ad that you want to add the parameter to.
    Keyword 3
  4. Click Edit and select Change URL options.
    Keyword 4
  5. In the Tracking template field, add the {lpurl}?mh_keyword={keyword} parameter.
    Keyword 5
  6. Click Make changes to save. The changes will be applied at the level you’ve defined.

What does {lpurl} mean?

{lpurl} stands for Landing Page URL. Using the {lpurl} parameter in AdWords dynamically inserts the final URL for each ad into your template so you don’t have to keep adding it.

If we use auto-tagging, do we still need to use "{lpurl}?mh_keyword={keyword}" at the end of our final URLs?

Yes, you still need to add "{lpurl}?mh_keyword={keyword}" to every final URL to receive keyword data in Mediahawk. This will not affect your auto-tagging.

If you have any questions or would like more information on how to use the tracking template, please don't hesitate to contact your Mediahawk Account Manager.
